St Mary’s Church

A bedrock for village life events for a thousand years, this ancient church opens daily for villagers and visitors, offering peace and tranquillity. In an enduring place of prayer and sanctuary, solace is often found by placing a pebble in the prayer pool for a loved one or by leaving prayer requests at the Lady altar.

The village congregation is a handful of people attending services and Holy Communion in St Mary’s or at any of its five sister churches.  It keeps the church and grounds in good condition and welcomes about nine thousand visitors annually.  It strives to ‘love Thy neighbour’ in the community and the world, and to live by Christian values.  Linking with other churches and ecumenical groups augments these contributions.

In 2023, Swansea and Brecon Diocese was reorganised to implement a Ministry Area model, aiming to improve the quality of church life and facilitate greater community mission. The former churches of the South West Gower Parish are now part of Gower Ministry Area. Churches in this area are grouped into 4 clusters. We are part of the South West Gower cluster, led by Rev Peter Lewis and Rev Canon Roger Donaldson.

Pitton Chapel is part of the Swansea and Gower Methodist Circuit and serves the communities of Rhossili, Middleton, Pitton and Pitton Cross.

Methodism is a Christian denomination and movement that has strong modern values and promotes social justice..

The Chapel holds a regular service on alternate Sundays at 10.00 a.m. Services are either conducted by one of the Circuit Ministers or a Lay Preacher. Special services are held throughout the year at Easter, Harvest and Christmas. Everyone is welcome to join us for a service– whether a local resident or a visitor to the area. The Chapel is also available for christenings, weddings and funerals on request.

The current Chapel was opened in 1887, and in 2010-11 was beautifully restored. The interior has a period feeling, and an eye-catching feature is a stained-glass window designed by local glass artist Mary Hayman, installed as part of the refurbishment.

The Chapel has a small community garden with benches for walkers and cyclists to stop, and sit, and admire the view over-looking Mewslade Bay and the Bristol Channel. The Chapel has Eco Church status and supports local recycling activities. The Chapel also supports a number of charitable causes in the Swansea area.
