Pet Health Information

An Apple a day keeps the doctor away

But how can we keep our pets away from vets? The RSPCA offers excellent advice on its website both generally and more specifically for a range of pets, from mice to horses, with an even wider range of topics from microchipping to banishing fleas and worms. But they do caution that if you’re concerned about your pet’s health, call or book an appointment with a vet.

Battersea is another good website with an excellent range of topics on dog and cat health and wellbeing, including their mental health, training and tricks and safety. They also provide seasonal tips.

9 toxic foods for dogs

Some of these foods or substances may surprise you. You can download a PDF from Battersea about this here.

  1. Onion, garlic and chives
  2. Chocolate
  3. Macadamia nuts
  4. Corn on the cob
  5. Avocado
  6. Artificial sweetener (xylitol)
  7. Alcohol
  8. Cooked bones
  9. Grapes and raisins

Chocolate is always a risk at times like Christmas and Easter, where it might be left within reach of your dog.  Even small amounts of chocolate and of these other items can be fatal so always act immediately and take your dog to the vets. Read more about this here.

These 7 items are particularly dangerous for cats:

  1. Alcohol
  2. Onions
  3. Milk (perhaps surprisingly, but cats are lactose intolerant)
  4. Chocolate
  5. Lilies (including pollen)
  6. Antifreeze (Ethylene glycol – cats like this as it has a sweet taste)
  7. Medicines (Paracetamol and ibuprofen are highly toxic)
